**Careers that Change Lives**

**Principal Software Systems Engineer**

The Medtronic Cardiac Ablation Solutions team is looking for a Principal Software Systems Engineer to join our SW/FW RD Organization to design, develop, and drive commercialization of new software-based features and modifications to capital systems for the cardiac electrophysiology lab. This role is targeted to work primarily with a newly acquired organization and is expected to support team integration and trust-building between Medtronic and newly acquired staff members. The individual will spend significant time listening, collaboratively problem-solving, and driving alignment on technical design decisions across sites and functions.

Areas of responsibilities span the software development lifecycle and include product concept ideation, requirement generation and review, application and software platform design, Agile product ownership, test design and tooling, and software documentation. Candidates must be able to translate design inputs into software options, concepts, and user stories, write detailed software requirement specifications, generate and review design documentation, interface specifications, test specifications and test reports in compliance with design control procedures used within the medical device industry.

_Cardiac Ablation Solutions seeks candidates who will meet our customer expectations by striving without reserve for the greatest possible reliability and quality in our products, processes and systems by being accountable, having a voice, and taking action._

**A Day in the Life**

+ Design and develop application, embedded, and computing systems software to be integrated with mechanical and electrical systems.

+ Establish strong relationships with cross-functional engineering team members and be able to prioritize software development, documentation, and testing tasks for developers, considering cross-functional dependencies and goals.

+ Set technical priorities in an Agile environment as part of multi-site team. Serve in Product Owner roles for various workstreams, depending on project needs and team size.

+ Strong ability to listen, build trust, and problem solve collaboratively.

+ Provide coaching and guidance to less senior team members in working efficiently and effectively; establishing clear priorities in alignment with schedule and goals; delivering quality designs according to process.

+ Anticipate and mitigate technical risks. Suggest, support, and negotiate decision-making tradeoffs between scope, budget, and schedule, while meeting safety and regulatory requirements.

+ Solve difficult, complex, undefined problems and issues, requiring detailed information gathering, analysis, and investigation.

+ Negotiate with others across multiple functions or team sites to reach understanding or agreement, and influence decision-making.

+ Represent the organization as a primary contact for specific technical programs, and effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders at various levels.

+ Author, review, and perform traceability for technical software/firmware requirements, with the goal for each to be clear, concise, straightforward, and precise.

+ Perform risk analysis activities (FMEA) for software designs.

+ Coordinate, draft, review, and finalize technical project documents as needed with limited supervision.

+ Train on and apply the appropriate standards, processes, procedures, and tools throughout the software development life cycle, following FDA regulations as well as IEC 62304 for medical device software.

+ Develop a broad understanding of the Medtronic Cardiac Ablation Solutions product lines and their interaction points with each other as well as external equipment.

+ Maintain an attitude of positive flexibility, sometimes performing assigned work outside the boundaries of a typical software systems engineering job description to meet overall team deadlines and milestones.

**Must Have: Minimum Requirements**

+ A Bachelors Degree in engineering field with 7 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with 5 years of relevant experience. Software, Computer Science, Electrical, or Biomedical Engineering preferred.

**Nice to Have**

+ Masters Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or Business Administration (MBA).

+ Demonstrated mastery in product-based software development.

+ Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to condense highly complex technical topics into concise, clear requirements and direction.

+ Experience being part of an acquisition or merger.

+ Experience with highly regulated and/or safety-critical systems is required; experience working in the medical device industry and understanding of regulations such as 21CFR Part 820 and ISO 13485, and ISO 62304 preferred. Electrophysiology background or knowledge is a major plus.

+ Experience in ideation, development, and release of large electro-mechanical capital products with both embedded firmware and application software running on Linux.

+ Strong knowledge of software engineering tools and process: requirements authoring and verification systems, issue/bug tracking, configuration management, integration/release testing, rigorous verification, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), etc.

+ Experience with Microsoft suite of tools (Project, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)

+ Experience with Agile Software Development Methodologies (Scrum, SAFe).

+ Certification for Agile roles such as Product Owner, Developer, etc.

+ At least 2 years experience as a coding SW development engineer. Understanding of broad technical software design concepts such as object-oriented programming, common design patterns, and software testing.

+ Experience with common software development tools/platforms/languages used in medical capital equipment (GIT, Azure DevOps/TFS, C++, Linux, Windows, Qt, OpenGL/DirectX, Embedded C, .NET/C#, etc).

+ Proven ability to work in a team environment with strong collaboration skills, engaging with technical and non-technical staff across multiple geographical RD sites, including significant remote/videoconference-based work.
