The Pain Therapies Applied Research group is focused on researching and developing new therapies to reduce this disease burden The research group is part of the broader Research and Core Technologies organization, which focuses on developing early-stage concepts and therapy innovations within Medtronics Neuromodulation division, with the goal of delivering products that impact patient lives and drive Medtronics growth.


As a member of the Pain Therapies Applied Research team, you will work collaboratively with other internal scientists, clinical evaluation specialists, business partners as well as external researchers and physicians to identify new research opportunities to advance existing and new therapies. This role will also propose, design, and oversee pilot studies for proof-of-concept/feasibility to demonstrate the potential of new therapies, and/or concepts within existing therapies. This role may also work on projects that have matured into development and lead one or more of its scientific components to ensure projects overall success.

**A Day in the Life**

As a Scientist on the Research and Core Technologies Team, you will propose, design, execute, and manage research projects to investigate approaches to improve existing therapies and address new applications that aim to reduce our patients disease burden and improve their quality of life. You will work collaboratively to:


1. Understand the therapy and identify the need:

Gain a thorough understanding of current Neuromodulation products, initially focused on Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) for Chronic Pain and identify areas for enhancements

Assimilate information from published and unpublished sources and physician partnerships to identify unmet needs and generate ideas


2. Identify novel concepts and test concept feasibility:

Design and execute hypothesis-driven research work (e.g. computational, pre-clinical, human clinical, as needed) to generate and analyze data sets that demonstrate concepts feasibility

Manage and support internal and external research projects. Demonstrate ability to work independently and meet pre-defined timelines.


3. Translate concept to technology

Champion ideas into products by working cross-functionally with engineering, clinical, risk, regulatory, and medical safety partners

Generate intellectual property and work with patent attorneys to file patents


4. Disseminate innovations

Publish and present internal reports to capture research findings and communicate to peers and management

Publish and present findings in peer-reviewed journals and conferences

**Must Haves**

Bachelors Degree and 7+ years of relevant experience OR Advanced Degree and 5+ years of relevant experience


**Nice to Have**

Bachelors Degree in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering

Advanced degree in Biomedical Engineering, Neuroscience

Demonstrated domain knowledge in neuromodulation and/or neural engineering research

Experience with preclinical, clinical, or computational hypothesis-driven research study design, management and execution in neuroscience, neuromodulation, or neural engineering or equivalent

Ability to interact and work in a team-based environment including collaboration across disciplines

Ability to communicate ideas, concepts, and plans

Expertise of central and/or peripheral nervous systems anatomy and physiology

Experience with data processing and analyzing large and diverse data sets, including working with computing and data analysis environments (e.g. Matlab) and/or programming languages (e.g., C++, Python)

Excellent problem-solving skills and able to work on various levels of the problem

Ability to obtain and maintain credentialing for access to operating rooms, included up-to-date vaccinations

Ability to travel locally and domestically within US up to 25% of the time
