This position is in the Battery Electrochemical Systems group in the Research Technology organization of Medtronic Energy Component Center (MECC). The scientist will have the opportunity to create and develop battery solutions with novel materials and designs for future medical devices. The Battery Electrochemical Systems group at Medtronic has a long, storied history of making significant contributions to the world of lithium metal and lithium ion batteries, especially pertaining to medical devices.

The scientist will find great opportunities to contribute to the development of next generation of medical devices by creating novel energy solutions that can transform lives. Responsibilities will include interactions with internal business and operating unit customers to understand system level needs, decompose to component requirements to architect battery solutions and interfacing with technology roadmaps.

A Day in the Life:

Plan and execute experiments to evaluate new battery electrode materials and electrolytes; apply critical thinking and scientific principles to interpret results and present analysis to functional group and project group as necessary

Develop predictive design and performance models of batteries and electrochemical systems using physics based or data-based approaches

Collaborate with product development teams on FMEAs, FTAs, hazard assessments, and assist in developing reliability and system longevity models

Author test plans, reports, and white papers as necessary to document the work conducted, present technical content and project updates in technical and design reviews, project and management updates

Stay current with state of the art in lithium metal and lithium ion battery literature and patents

Interface with internal business and operating unit customers to obtain system level requirements for medical devices and decompose into battery and component level requirements

Communicate and establish relationships with external materials and cell vendors as necessary


Required:


BA/BS Degreewith a minimum of 7 years of experience in an industrial setting or an MS/PhD with at least 5 years of experience.


Nice to Have:

Bachelors Degree in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering with a minimum of 4 years of experience in an industrial setting or an MS/PhD and at least two years of relevant experience

Expertise in electrochemistry, lithium metal and lithium ion batteries, knowledge of lithium metal, lithium ion battery materials, materials characterization techniques, proficient in advanced battery test methods, data acquisition and data handling methods

Masterss or Ph.D. in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering

Hands on experience in building and testing battery prototypes with novel electrode materials and electrolytes, experienced in working in a dry rom, experience in working with battery test systems and potentiostats

Statistical analysis using JMP or Minitab, optimization methods, Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) Green Belt certification

Experience with Python, R or MATLAB to process, visualize, analyze and model experimental data

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Project management experience or similar leadership experience
