The Northridge site is the headquarter of the Diabetes Group with manufacturing, research and development, Quality and various administrative and functional support operations. Our Northridge EHS team oversees and manages the efforts and effectiveness of the environmental, health and safety organization for the Medtronic Diabetes Group in Northridge, CA and San Antonio, TX. We strive to minimize the environmental impact of our operations and improve worker health and safety by proactively managing our programs as part of our Mission to make the world a healthier place.

The Principal EHS Specialist provides leadership and direction for the development and implementation of programs and systems to comply with international, federal, state and local EHS regulations and Company policies, strategies, initiatives and goals.Major areas of emphasis include:comprehensive employee health and safety programs including but not limited to: ergonomic injury reduction, industrial safety management, waste management, air emissions, wastewater discharge, and energy monitoring.Establishes systems for the monitoring of workplace safety risks and environmental impacts through the analysis of work processes, materials, equipment and the work habits of employees.Identifies potential or actual areas of non-compliance through audits or inspections.Ensures appropriate corrective action and preventive action is taken to address non-conformance issues.Develops and executes EHS training programs for employees in areas, such as, regulated EHS training, hazardous material safety and handling, emergency response, waste management, and life safety.Is highly self-directed and may provide work direction to others in support of day-to-day activities. Has excellent communication skills and provides education and training to the organization as required to assure sustainable programs and processes within EHS responsibilities of the business. Uses judgment in data analysis to develop and design solutions to resolve complex EHS regulatory and technical issues.

**A Day in the Life**

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

+ Provide strategic vision and leadership as the Principal EHS Specialist ensuring compliance andeffective sustainable EHS systems, programs and processes and train and mentor staff in these methods.

+ Lead, develop, implement and monitor compliance with federal and state EHS regulations and Corporate Medtronic EHS standards.

+ Partner with and educate business functions to assure that employee safety, environmental sustainable practices and compliance with EHS regulations are supported.

+ Facilitate the development and execution of facility-wide EHS goals and objectives

+ Establish, perform and report metrics pertinent to EHS activities

+ Lead and facilitate the development and implementation of improvement plans to enhance compliance and improve safety, health and environmental performance including a strong emphasis on accident reduction and employee ownership of safety.

+ Participate in the investigation of environmental and safety incidents to ensure root cause identification and resolution. Ensure corrective actions are taken to fulfill regulatory and Corporate compliance.

+ Periodically function as the on-call person for plant emergency response activities or to investigate serious incidents.

+ Manages complex EHS job functions for duties such as job safety analyses/risk assessments, EHS training, workplace incident analyses, industrial hygiene evaluations, EHS inspections, environmental regulatory reporting, permit negotiation, data collection / analysis and internal audits.

+ Maintain, improve and sustain various EHS programs involving multifunctional staff participation including, but not limited to, emergency response and ergonomics.

+ Evaluates new hazardous materials to ensure compliance in EHS requirements and facility procedures.

+ Lead and partner with business functions to resolve complex problems.

+ Selects and applies professional EHS principles, theories and concepts and uses independent judgment to develop and design practical solutions to complex EHS issues.

+ Responsible for monitoring employee exposure to chemical and other toxic substances and physical hazards, including Industrial Hygiene (IH) sampling and coordinating the activities with Industrial Hygienists, and other safety consultants as required.

+ Selects, trains and monitors the work of all functional area EHS Representatives.

+ Facilitates an active EHS Committee involving managers, engineering and employee representatives as appropriate.

**Must Have: Minimum Requirements**

+ Bachelors degree

+ Minimum of 7 years of EHS experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years EHS experience

**Nice to Have**

+ Certified Hazardous Material Manager (CHMM) certification or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification.

+ Bachelors degree in a technical field (chemistry, biology, environmental, safety, etc.) with training in core Environmental, Health and Safety disciplline.

+ Expertise in various local, State and Federal environmental, health and safety regulatory compliance

+ Process Safety Management Knowledge

+ Proven technical and project management skills

+ Strong leadership and influence management skills

+ Good verbal communication skills

+ Good analytical and problem-solving skills
