This Principal Electro/MechanicalEngineer position reports into the Sustaining / Released Product Engineering organization within the Cardiac Surgery RD function. This role would lead and/or contributes on projects in support of commercially released medical products and equipment. This role will be responsible for project management including project scoping and reporting of sustaining engineering projects of capital equipment, as well as mechanical and electro-mechanical devices within a regulated work environment. Will lead design change efforts to include feasibility studies and testing on new and modified designs. May provide work direction to other engineers and technicians.


A Day in the Life:


This position is responsible for engineering deliverables associated with the capital equipment portfolio within the cardiac surgery environment.


Lead product and component obsolescence activities for capital equipment within the Cardiac Surgery business including coordination with marketing, operations, systems cleanup and customer management activities.


Identify continuous improvement opportunities for released, commercialized Cardiac Surgery products. Create rules of engagement for working with cross-functional teams including downstream quality, manufacturing engineering, contract manufacturing and supplier quality within the CS business.


Leads troubleshooting and failure analysis efforts related to existing capital equipment and associated systems. Supports and sells decisions through thorough engineering practices and data analysis


Follow documented design processes to meet regulatory and company requirements. Responsibilities include generating engineering documentation for a design control process in a regulated environment.


Works independently to develop technical solutions to complex problems that require ingenuity and creativity.


This position will work directly with other functional areas to achieve overall project goals e.g., quality, regulatory, manufacturing, etc.


This position will provide recommendations for tools, technologies and processes and contribute to continuous process improvement.


**Must Have: Minimum Requirements**


+ Bachelors degree required

+ Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience


Nice to Have:


BS in Engineering - Systems, EE, ME, Software


7-10+ years of Industry experience


Prior relevant technical lead or engineering team lead roles


Direct experience in one or more of the following disciplines of engineering Systems, EE, ME, Software. Knowledge of the others.


Knowledge of human factors, concept development, requirements development and product validation


Experience developing real-time embedded electronic products


Working knowledge of IEC 60601, IEC 62304, IEC 62366, UL, ANSI and ASTM


Familiar with FDA 510(k) and EU CE processes


Powerful problem solving, risk assessment and negotiation skills


Solid communication, presentation, technical writing and organizational skills


Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, MS Project, requirements management systems


In depth understanding of electro-mechanical systems utilizing embedded software


Requirements management tools/databases


Design Control


Masters in Engineering (Systems, EE, ME, Software) with a minimum of 7 years engineering experience


Experience with instrumentation such as ablation equipment, heart/lung machines and arterial blood pumps, auto transfusion devices and diagnostic devices.


Be able to perform work in the presence of blood, tissue, organs, etc.


Be comfortable working with global, virtual teams
