In this exciting role as a Principal Atomic Spectroscopy Analytical Chemistyou will have the responsibility of performing analytical testing for metals and trace metals using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). The candidate must possess advanced technical knowledge in multiple atomic spectroscopy and ICP analytical sample preparation techniques, instrumentation, analysis, and test method validation; as well as excellent lab notebook documentation skills, and proficiency in report authoring. The role will be a technical opinion leader requiring strong customer service experience and functions as part of an analytical chemistry team that works under ISO17025 requirements in the medical device field.

**A Day in the Life**


The Principal Chemist will work as part of the product support research and development teams within the Analytical lab, in partnership with the Sr Principal ICP Chemist.Specific job duties will include triaging test requests to define testing protocols, instrument setup and performance verification, trouble shooting of atomic spectroscopy and sample preparation instrumentation, preparing samples, analyzing samples, and authoring reports.Additional duties may include supporting other project work in the lab that utilizes analytical techniques other than ICP-OES or ICP-MS.


The Principal Chemist must possess the ability to:


+ Thoroughly understand the application of sample prep and ICP analysis of a variety of material types; this includes a significant grasp of the scientific principles underlying the test method.

+ Contribute to defining the direction for new processes, standards, or operational plans based on business strategy with a significant impact on work group results.

+ Provide guidance, coaching, training, and work direction to the atomic spectroscopy team.

+ Understand and define a testing pathway to address the clients needs, which includes gaining an understanding of what problem/question the client is trying to solve and defining a protocol for the study.

+ Create and execute the study protocol, including preparing and analyzing the samples, and interpreting the data.

+ Create a report documenting the study outcome.

+ Follow up with clients to make sure the study information is understood and that they are satisfied with the work performed.

+ Conduct exploratory research to produce new knowledge and potential products; conceives, organizes, promotes, and executes ideas and plans to increase chemistry's role in and contribution to the discovery and chemical approaches to meet exploratory objectives in product discovery.

+ Develop research proposals to provide a technically and economically sound basis for developing and evaluating new or improved products, synthetic methods, processes, and analytical and physical testing techniques.


**Must Have: Minimum Requirements**


+ Requires mastery of atomic spectroscopy and full knowledge of industry practices, typically obtained through advanced education combined with experience.

+ Requires a Baccalaureate degree (or for degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree which satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. 214.2(h)( 4)(iii)(A)

+ Minimum 7 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.

+ Advanced technical knowledge of ICP-OES and/or ICP-MS

+ Thorough understanding of decomposition chemistry and techniques for atomic spectroscopy analysis including dry ashing, wet ashing, open and closed vessel wet oxidation, and microwave assisted digestion using mineral acids including HNO 3 , HF, HCl, H 2 SO 4 , and HClO4.

+ Experience and understanding of cGMP, ISO17025, ISO10993, FDA and ICH requirements

+ Ability to manage complex projects including work delegation and review of work products

+ Strong interpersonal skills
